Poignancy.

I watched the movie Up for the first time tonight. Have you seen it?

I thought the whole thing was fantastic, but the opening sequence depicting Carl and Ellie's relationship was the part that really got me. It was so touching, so poignant and so moving. Especially for an animated movie.

In other words, I was crying within the first 10 minutes. Somehow, I got totally swept up into this couple and their pure, wholehearted devotion to each other. Truly the love of a lifetime. Which is what makes the end of the sequence so heartbreaking.

If you haven't seen the movie, or just want to relive the emotion, here's the clip:

Maybe I'm a sap—no, I know I'm a sap—but I don't see how you can't be touched by Carl and Ellie. Despite the fact that they are simply characters and their story is fabricated, the kind of love conveyed to the audience is very real. And maybe what makes it so powerful is that their story is not far from the kind of love we all dream about.

Which movie moments pull at your heartstrings?

12 love notes:

  1. I cried SO HARD watching Up and I was on a freaking plane.

The movie that always pulls my heart strings...I don't know. I normally watch strange movies like The Big Lebowski and Pulp Fiction. Up definitely pulled at my heart...but documentaries always do too. There's a documentary about children in the brothels of India and that was heartbreaking.

  2. I BAWLED at that part of the movie. What a great film :)It has such a realistic look at marriage.

I cried during Lindsay Lohan's Parent Trap movie last week, too. That's embarrassing.

  3. Omigosh, I cry EVERY TIME I watch that scene (hence I won't do it at work, haha). It makes my heart melt. That, and the end of The Notebook, get me every time. I love when old people love each other :)

  4. That scene is so touching. I can't watch it now.. I'll just start to cry. It's amazing what they were able to do with a few snippets of their life and barely a word spoken. Up is definitely one of my favorite movies :)

  5. I've still never seen it but after I saw that clip on about 2-3 other blogs I don't know if I could watch it. I was in pieces. I wrote a post about it myself. LOL

  7. I was crying at the end of that sequence. I'm a big sap too. And that part always gets to me. But its probably one of the best animated movie openings I've seen in a long time. That little segment conveys a lot.

  8. Oh man! Such a great movie. Except that I saw it in theatres with my family who doesn't cry at anything, so when I bawled they laughed. Greaattt.

Typical, but I Am Sam makes me cry like, all the time. So sad...

  9. Ugh, Up! was so good and so sad. I can identify with Elle so much although I hope my story goes a little differently in the end. Totally bawling like a baby every time I see that scene...

  10. So...I cried at the theater right off the bat, just like you...then just balled my eyes out again just now! So touching. I love that movie.

  11. I balled! That was the sweetest montage EVER. And it made me a little sad because, in the end, all our lives could be displayed in a montage like that.
